THE GREAT RACE

ROTARY ROAMERS

ORIENTEERING EVENT
PASADENA AND ARCADIA CLUBS

(In conjunction with a pre-planned event of

The Los Angeles Orienteering Club)

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2010 9 AM, GRIFFITH PARK

Okay, I got inspired by one of our members talking about throwing Tomahawks.  It woke up my Fess Parker/Daniel Boone spirit of outdoor exploration (for those of you who remember that TV show about 40 years ago).

Orienteering is an organized outdoor sport for individuals, navigating a course by hiking or running to find your way through the trees and fields. Map Reading, Navigation and Route Choice are the key. It uses those time-tested antiques: a map and compass. Orienteering is a sport for everyone, regardless of age or experience. At advanced levels it is very competitive. Others, like me, just walk it.  It is done at your pace.  Whether you run or walk, you experience the satisfaction of finding your own way.  You look for certain “control” points, punch a card to prove you’ve been there, and complete the circuit ending up where you started.  You will be timed, and the pair completing the course in the shortest time wins.  Perfect for all you folks who love the High Sierras.  This sport has been called the thinking person’s hike.  For much more information, including a map of where to meet, go to the Los Angeles Orienteering Club website.  Or contact Cory Daniel Boone Brendel at below edress.

We will do this in pairs. Father/son, husband/wife, or just two friends.  We will do the Yellow course, which is one level up from total novice.  The novice course, called White, is frankly way too easy.  It’s for the Brownies and Cubs.  You can do yellow.   There will be instruction for beginners at the event.

The Arcadia Rotary will be invited to join us, because I understand they have some very outdoorsy members.  RSVP to corybrendel@sbcglobal.net no later than Thursday, Dec. 9th, 5 pm.  Cory will send more details to interested people.  The organizers reserve the right to cancel this event due to lack of interest, contacting ONLY those who have rsvp’d. JOIN US AND GET AWAY FROM THOSE STORES FOR A FEW HOURS. Consider this a moderately difficult hike, lasting about 2 hours.
