TLC attempts to select 8th graders who would benefit from a weekend intensive to enhance their leadership skills. Its a younger version of RYLA which teaches leadership of others while TLC focuses on self development.
250 8th graders representing all of District 5300, convened at a camp in Crestline. These individuals were selected by teachers and principals because of their capacity to lead or expectation that they can become leaders. Several of the TLCer’s reported back to us.
The objectives for TLC are:
- increase self confidence to improve leadership skills.
- provide motivational and authoritarian speakers as examples.
- develop an understanding of Rotary, to be the seeds of future Rotarians.
- keep cliques, groups and friends apart; let the kids develop new relationships with other future leaders.
Scott Greenberg the coordinator explained ” before you can lead others, you have to lead yourself”, that everyone has “their own cancer” (challenges), which need to be overcome to be better leaders.
When questioned all the students said the experience changed them. One petite softly spoken girl said before the camp “I wanted to be an architect, to sit in the back and just work. Now I want my own firm.”
A big thanks to a newer member Bruno Esquivel for being our club’s representative at TLC.
