Bob Deao introduced students of the month for March (remainder) and April.  They were as follows:  Casey Young, Samantha Miller, Derek Ha, and Hana Rudolph.

March, 2010 (in addition to those previously named)

Casey Young was named the Performing Arts Student of the Month for March, 2010.  His school activities include Arcadia High School’s Marching Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, Symphony Orchestra.  Leadership roles included that of the french horn section in the marching band, leader of the pep band, and principal horn in the symphony orchestra.  As an Interclub Council representative, he participated in Music Mentors which involved him in making weekly visits to middle schools in order to tutor students in instrument performance and music theory.  In addition, Casey took part in the Senior Men and Women Service Organization.

Casey’s community activities include being the founding president of the Chinese American Citizen’s Alliance Youth Council.  He also served as a intern for the Chinese American Museum.

In religious activities Casey served as church pianist for the Los Angeles Chinese Alliance Church, and as coordinator of the Vocation Bible School.

Casey’s recreation moments find him again involved in music, playing the piano and french horn.  He also is involved in martial arts.

As to future plans, Casey looks forward to attending the University of California’s Irvine campus where he expects to major in history, preparing him for a future occupation of historic preservation.

April, 2010

Samantha Miller was named the Athletics Student of the Month for April, 2010.  Samantha was the catcher on Arcadia High School’s varsity softball team.  As such, for all four years she was on the starting team.  For two of those years she was placed on the All Pacific League.

Samantha’s community activities include volunteering at the Avalon Medical Center on Catalina Island working with patients.  She also volunteers in a charitable organization (the G.A.P.), helping distribute food and groceries.

Samantha received an athletics scholarship for softball at Utah State where she plans to major in psychology.  She eventually wants to become a dermatologist.

Derek Ha was named the Academics Student of the Month for April, 2010.  He has achieved a 3.95 grade point average, and was named to the National Honor Society.

Derek’s school activities include Arcadia High’s national champion Constitution Team, its Speech and Debate Team, as well as participation in the Quiz Bowl.  He was also involved in the school newspaper. the tennis team (junior varsity), and the Big Brothers.

Derek’s community activities include teaching English for two weeks to underprivileged high school students in China.  He is also a library volunteer, as welll as a volunteer with the Chinese Parents Booster Club.

Derek’s hobbies include reading about history and politics.

Derek hopes to attend Pomona College with a major in political science.  He has not yet decided on a future occupation.

Hana Rudolph was named the Performing Arts Student of the Month for April, 2010.  She also has maintained a 4.00 grade point average, and was made Secretary of the National Honor Society.

Hana’s related school activities include participation in the “New Spirit” Show Choir (which she served as Vice President), the Concert Choir, the Women’s Choir, and the After-School Choir.  She was also involved in drama and musical theater.

In addition to the foregoing, Hana participated in student government holding the offices of Secretary and Treasurer.  She has also been involved in Amnesty International.

Hana’s community activities include reading the Jewish Audio Bible for the i-Tunes podcast.

Religious activities include chanting Torah, teaching Torah Talk, assisting at Shabbat school, and organizing festivities.

Hana’s hobbies include singing, dancing, reading, leading, and participation in “Krav Maga”, an Israeli form of hand-to-hand combat training.

Hana plans to attend Johns Hopkins University with a major in chemistry, preparing her for an occupation as Materials Chemist.
