Our program featured Bobby Hundley, Director of the Southern California Music Theater. Bobby is a classical actor, educated at Cal State Northridge and London England. Bobby noted that Theater Arts was popular prior to the introduction of television, then tapered off dramatically, especially on the West coast. Bobby described the history of theater at the Mission Playhouse, built specifically for the “Mission Play” in the late 20’s. The theater was used for housing during WWII and went into decline later, only to be renovated in the late 60’s. In the 70’s there was somewhat of a revival of theater with many theaters seating less than 99 people, starting up. Following the 9-11 terrorist attack, there was a significant negative impact on theaters, as they are costly to run profitably, causing many to close operations.
Bobby asked the question; Why get involved in the Arts? Which he proceeded to answer by noting that the arts give us the ability to have not just a good life, but a great life. He also noted that kids with an arts exposure and or background get more involved, often choose a personally more suitable vocation and are less likely to get into trouble. Bobby also encouraged everyone with the fact that music has a positive, albeit short term, impact on our cognitive abilities.
At this point Bobby introduced Kristen Rowles, Team Performer of the Year, Hollywood High graduate who trained in New York. Kristen performed a 3 song piece with piano accompaniment provided by our own pianist David Knight. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Before I Gaze at You Again and Vanella Ice Cream. Kristen has a wonderful voice and dazzled the Rotarians.
