A representative from Southern California Edison visited the Club today. His purpose was to inform our members about what to do and what not to do if you encounter downed power lines. First and foremost, do not approach any downed power line and do call 911. This includes telephone and cable lines and the drop line to your house. Something to know is you can still be shocked even if you do not touch the line. Thirty feet is the minimum distance you should keep between you and a downed line. It is impossible to know if a wire is energized by its appearance. A line doesn’t need to be arching to be dangerous. Be cautious about anything else the wire may be touching like a metal fence, vehicle, or pool of water. If you or someone else is in a vehicle that is in contact with a downed line, it is best to stay in the vehicle.
