Mike Real announced that on December 2 and 3 he will need Rotary volunteers to help with RYLA.

Denise Weaver (representing her husband Matt) announced that next Thursday (November 19) there will be a mixer in honor of Weaver & Associates’ 50th year in business as well as to support the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce. The mixer will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Weaver office located at 711 W. Camino Real, Arcadia. Gina Post-Franco announced that sadly this would be her last day in Arcadia Rotary. She and her immediate family are in the process of moving to Huntington Beach in order to expand the presence in that area of Post Alarm Systems. Gina’s family is also in the process of expansion, Gina being 22 weeks pregnant. The Post family will continue a presence in Arcadia Rotary in the person of Gina’s brother.

Gil Stromsoe announced that Rotary International’s polio fund drive had now reached $100 million, qualifying it for a matching grant. However, the need continues, especially in Northern India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. Therefore, a new fund drive will now commence to raise another $100 million in two years, the deadline for the next matching grant. As part of the new drive, the polio pig was passed around the room.

At this point, it should be noted that thanks to the efforts of, inter alia, Rotary International, November 14 is World Diabetes Day. On November 8 the “Walk for a Cure of Juvenile Diabetes” brought nearly 12,000 walkers and a few runners to Dodger Stadium. More than $1.2 million was collected for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Howard Naness

It also should be noted that the memory of Sid Naness lives on. His son Howard Naness was present at the November 13 meeting, sitting at Sid’s old table. Howard reminded us of his father’s long connection with Rotary and appreciated Rotary’s large attendance at Sid’s tribute at Beth David.

Meanwhile, Sid’s widow (Howard’s mother) Ellin Naness will relocate to Sunrise of Mission Viejo, 26151 Country Club Drive #136, Mission Viejo, California 92691. Ellin’s new phone number is (949) 716-9680. Her email address is ellin.naness@gmail.com. Ellin is only one hour and fifteen minutes from here. Visit her during trips to such places as Laguna, South Coast Plaza, Dana Point, San Diego, the Orange County Performing Arts Center, the Spectrum, or whenever you should feel like paying her a visit.
