Four of our Club members shared how they met their “Valentine”.
Yvonne Flint
In 1981 Yvonne followed her boys friend to California but soon after broke up. She was happy to be in California, however. Having grown up in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, there is a one-degree separation with others in the church. Craig was also a part of the church and he was to be the best man at a wedding in which Yvonne was a bridesmaid. There was a special gathering of California folks prior to the wedding and Yvonne and Craig were both there. Attending church that morning, Craig says Yvonne was smiling at him. Yvonne remembers his blue corduroy suit. They spent the afternoon and evening together with friends. They didn’t see each other again until the wedding. He asked her out soon there after and they had their first date at Crystal Cove State Beach and then a movie. And they’ve been together ever since… Happily Ever After.
Bruce McCallum
Bruce’s job took him to a small town near Springfield Mass. When he got there he needed to buy some furniture for his apartment. He was recommended to a furniture store in Springfield where he ordered a custom couch. When the couch arrived, it was not what Bruce ordered, however, the sales man insisted that it was what he ordered. Bruce worked his way up the food chain and spoke with the sales manager who insisted that it was what he ordered. Bruce insisted on talking to the furniture buyer. They buyer insisted it was what Bruce ordered and that he must pay for it. They went round and round and finally came to a compromise that left them both fairly unhappy.
About 6 months later one of Bruce’s friends told him about a young lady that he thought would be a good match for Bruce. Bruce called her and they had a wonderful conversation on the phone. They decided to go on a date. When Bruce went to pick up Joanne, her father answered the door and would you believe it was the furniture buyer. After the date her father told Joanne that she shouldn’t date that jerk. That was 48 years ago…
Brad Miller
Brad was engaged and it was broken off. He was devastated and swore off dating for over a year. His friend asked him how he was going to find a good wife. Brad says he has a list. After seeing the list his friend said he thinks he has someone for him. Brad thought, ya right. Her name was Julie Miller you should call her. He said he would, but he didn’t. His friend had Julie as a client and he followed up with Brad and asked him to call her again. Brad said he would, but he didn’t. Brad went through this same routine a couple of times until he finally called. Of course when he finally did, she told him she couldn’t talk to him that she was busy. They set up a time to talk later and they did. It was a good conversation and they set up a date. Brad still very skeptical didn’t want to invest too heavily in the date. He got free tickets to a concert. They went to the concert and it was terrible so they left. Julie however, became Brad’s permanent Valentine 25 years and counting.
Matt Weaver
While at San Diego State University, Matt taught surfing at the Mission Bay Aquatics Center. One session, Matt spotted a cute young blonde coed in her leopard bikini and wanted to make the move on her. One of the other guys got to her first however and Matt was “pissed”. He got his chance though and their official first date was playing tennis, but Matt was too tired to play so they went home. Matt redeemed himself by taking Denise to the river the following weekend. That was 30 years ago. On a side note for Denise’s 50th birthday, Matt bought her a new leopard bikini. Matt asked her to wear it to Rotary…
