- Jim Pontello presented Richard Schulhof with a check for $1,000 from the Rotary Foundation. The money is to be used by the Arboretum for development of the Child Learning Patio Center.
- October 30 at 10 a.m. is the JDRF-LA Walk for a Cure of Type 1 Diabetes at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Although JDRF stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 85 per cent of the Type 1 victims have now reached adulthood. Donors and Walkers can sign up with Bruno Esquivel (who has agreed to serve as this year’s Team Rotary Captain.) ] The Walk for a Cure is a 5K Walkathon, including a circle around both the Rose Bowl Stadium and golf courses. - The new directories for the 2016-17 year are now available. Please pick up a copy at the next meeting.
- Two teachers were honored as Teacher of the Year. Ben Ackers, Principal of Foothill Junior High, introduced Don Young, a 17 year teacher at Foothill. Mr. Ackers described Don as a great supporter of the other teachers and the administration. Our second teacher was introduced by Patti Montera from Highland Oaks Elementary School. She is Patti Eggers, a math teacher who is revered by the other teachers and her students who refer to her as the queen of teaching. Bruno Esquivel presented each with a plaque and a monetary gift.
- Bruno introduced our Students of the Month. The first student was Bridget Yu, a senior who is active in the Symphony Orchestra III as well as many school clubs. She would like to attend the U. of Pennsylvania and major in Neuroscience. Our second student was Seryeong Lee, a marching band member as well as a section leader who also does some tutoring. She wants to attend either Cornell or Columbia. Our athlete of the month was Clayton Barnett. He has played football for 4 years, and is the captain of the team. He is a member of the Calif. Scholarship Federation, and wants to attend U. of Michigan where he will study Biomedical Engineering.
- Next week, Oct. 27, will be a celebration of 89 years of Service above Self. We will have a special panel of past and present members.
