1. Polio progress: Gil Stromsoe announced that great progress has been made in the eradication of polio with India reporting only one new case this year. This progress was made possible by the ongoing campaign of Rotary International, some $173 million having been raised. In furtherance of the campaign the Polio Pig was again passed around.
2, Pumpkin plant availability: Jim Helms announced that as a result of the giant pumpkin contest (in which he managed to grow the biggest pumpkin), he now finds himself with 10 pumpkin plants left over, available to be given away. Any plants not taken will be disposed of.
3. The 2011 Rotary International Convention (May 21-25, 2011) in New Orleans was attended by Brad Miller, Arcadia Rotary’s next President. Brad reported that some 18,000 – 20,000 Rotarians attended the Convention, including 8–10 Arcadia Rotarians, along with various District Governors.
4. Polio Pig Shootout (Tues., June 14, 2011, from 6:30PM to 9:00 PM). Sho Tay announced that at his indoor shooting range at 16418 Valley Blvd. La Puente, Rotarians are invited to take part in a shootout to benefit the Polio Pig. Sho will provide the equipment.
5. Arcadia Rotary’s 85th Annual Installation Dinner (Fri., June 24, 2011) Gil Stromsoe reminded us of the need to sign up for the event (along with one’s spouse), already underwritten by member dues, to take place at the Brookside Golf Club. Dress code: (men) suits or coats and ties, (ladies) cocktail dresses.

6.  2011 Relay For Life of Arcadia CA (Saturday, June 25, 2011, 11AM) at Santa Anita Park to benefit the American Cancer Society was announced by Tom Miles. The theme is “Ikaika Mau Loa” and it means “Strength Forever”

7. Carnival Weekend (Fri., June 24 – Sun., June 26, 2011) Bob Hoffman announced that the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Summer Carnival at Arcadia County Park.
8. Arcadia’s Best Patriotic Parade (Sat., July 2, 2011, at 10 a.m.) will take place on First Avenue between Duarte Road and Huntington Drive. Included will be many of Arcadia’s former Rose Queens and Princesses from 1949-2011, a marching Marine band, Clydesdale horses, classic cars, local performers, a 40-foot model of the new Gold Line train and station, a 55-foot eye exam RV, Shriner minicars, the most popular gourmet food trucks, and much more. Bruce McCallum added that five or six Arcadia Rotarians were needed to help.
